Expert Treatment

Why choose an orthodontic specialist?

Teeth and their supporting structures, including the gums and face, can be permanently changed by orthodontic treatment.  As such, it is important that your treatment needs are properly addressed.  Just as there are specialists in medicine, such as cardiologists, there are specialists in dentistry.  An orthodontist is a specialist in moving teeth (orthodontics) and aligning jaws (dentofacial orthopedics) to optimize oral health, function, and aesthetics.  Their extensive training and clinical experience make orthodontists uniquely qualified to diagnose and treat a wide variety of bite and jaw problems.

Expert treatment provides:

  • Orthodontists are dentists first.  In addition to dental school, an orthodontist must complete at least two years of full time university-based education in an accredited orthodontic training program.  Only those who have successfully completed this formal education and accreditation may call themselves “orthodontists”.

Dr. Berco and Dr. DeLuca received their extensive four year orthodontic training from Harvard University, where they obtained a Certificate in Orthodontics and Doctorate in Medical Science.

  • Orthodontists are trained to use a variety of appliances to move teeth, including braces, clear aligner trays (such as Invisalign), and retainers, among others.  Dr. Berco and Dr. DeLuca will recommend the best appliance(s) to meet your needs.

  • Orthodontists limit their scope of practice to orthodontics only.  Dr. Berco and Dr. DeLuca have treated patients with a variety of bite and jaw issues.

  • Orthodontists in Ontario must be Fellows of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and registered as Orthodontic Specialists with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario.  Dr. Berco and Dr. DeLuca are also active members of the Ontario Association of Orthodontists, Canadian Association of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists, and Harvard Society for the Advancement of Orthodontics.  They continue to be involved in various research endeavours.
