About Treatment
Interceptive treatment for children
Early treatment is used to prevent a problem from developing, prevent a developing problem from becoming worse, or guide the growth of the jaws (dentofacial orthopaedics). Indications for early treatment include anterior or posterior crossbites, detrimental oral habits such as persistent thumb-sucking or tongue thrusts, severe crowding and jaw growth issues resulting in an underbites or significantly recessed chin. The appropriate use of early treatment may negate the need for additional treatment or reduce the complexity of second phase treatment.
Comprehensive treatment for teens
For most children, a single-phase of treatment is the best approach. Comprehensive treatment is initiated in the late mixed dentition or permanent dentition stage of development, typically when children are 10-13 years old. The goals of this treatment include optimal dental aesthetics, facial balance, occlusal function, oral health, and long-term stability of the teeth.
Adult treatment
Many people are surprised to learn that teeth may be straightened at any age. While an attractive smile is the main reason more adults are wearing braces, others choose treatment to prevent or improve periodontal (gum) problems, improve oral function, prevent abnormal wear of teeth, address jaw pain, manage sleep apnea or improve self-confidence and self-esteem. Limited treatment may also be initiated to facilitate restorative and periodontal (gum) procedures.
