Appointments

Patients are seen on an appointment basis.  After an appliance is placed, adjustment appointments will be necessary, every 4-8 weeks depending on your particular treatment needs.  Please note:

  1. While a growing number of patients are adults, the majority of our patients are school age, making it difficult to see everyone after school hours.  To ensure that children miss the least amount of school, appointments are generally made in the following manner:  Longer infrequent procedures, such as the placement or removal of appliances, are scheduled in the morning and early afternoon; routine adjustments and short appointments are scheduled during after-school hours

  2. Your appointment time has been especially reserved for you.  Please provide at least 48 hours notice if you cannot keep your appointment.  We will do our best to reschedule you promptly.

  3. We appreciate your effort to be on time for appointments as every effort is made by our team to extend the same courtesy.  If a patient arrives more than 10 minutes late for an appointment, out of consideration for other patients, the appointment may need to be altered or rescheduled.

Treatment time

Every effort will be made to achieve the best possible treatment result.  Poor cooperation, broken appliances and missed appointments are factors that can lengthen treatment time and affect the quality of the result.

Informed consent

It is important to us that you fully understand all aspects of your or your child’s orthodontic treatment, including all benefits, limitations, and potential risks.  If at any time you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to call the office or ask your questions at your next appointment.  We are also committed to ongoing patient education.  We believe this investment enables us to optimize the quality and efficiency of your care and provides you with a strong foundation for a lifetime of oral health.  To this end, reports and written communications are periodically given to our patients.  In the event that a parent/guardian does not accompany the patient to their appointment, these documents will be given to the patient to deliver to the parent/guardian.

Privacy practices

The confidentiality of your personal information is very important to us.  We are committed to collecting, using and disclosing your personal information responsibly.  Our office complies with the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and the Ontario Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004, (PHIPA), which governs how your personal health information may be collected, used, and disclosed within the healthcare system.  If you would like further information, please ask to see our Notice of Privacy Policy, which describes our privacy practices in detail.

Dental radiographs

Extra-oral radiographs (x-rays) are essential for obtaining an accurate diagnosis and monitoring treatment progress.  In our office, all efforts will be made to keep the number of exposures to a minimum.  These general radiographic principles are in keeping with the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) as outlined in the Healing Arts Radiation Protection (HARP) Act and the HARP Dental guidelines.  In addition, our office uses only digital dental radiographs with reduced radiation exposure over traditional film-based radiography.

Advanced technology

Our office is dedicated to providing you state-of-the-art care with efficiency and accuracy.  We use selective technology to achieve this goal, including digital dental radiographs (x-rays), paperless charting and scheduling system, and modern appliances and wires, which make treatment more comfortable.

Infection control

Our office maintains the highest standards of infection control so that our patients can be assured that their health is being protected.  We comply with all applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines to prevent the spread of infection.  Our staff employ universal precautions to prevent the transmission of bloodborne pathogens and established sterilization and disinfection techniques. In our office, your safety is our highest priority.

Oral hygiene

Poor oral hygiene may result in permanent tooth staining, cavities, and gum problems.  Our team will educate you on how to maintain excellent oral health throughout treatment and help you establish good oral hygiene habits for a lifetime.  Please note that tooth brushing is always available at our office prior to your appointment.

Routine dental check-up

An oral exam, professional dental cleaning, and any necessary fillings must be completed before braces are placed.  It is the responsibility of the patient and/or guardian to maintain regular check-ups with your general dentist or periodontist at least every 6 months, unless more frequent visits have been recommended.
